General description

COMPASS, the advanced collective traffic guidance and information system, allows the variable message signals management (VMSs – Varriable Message Signals) and the information displays concerning transport and traffic data. The messages can be predefined or be based on real time traffic information, providing the drivers with guidance about the road traffic, road incidents, exhibitions and anything else that could affect the transport.

Main features

The message for each panel is build or selected in real time on the basis of:

• Predefined messages
• Real time messages comprised of:
  • scenarios pre-defined by the road network operator
  • specific requirements defined by the operator (i.e. special events)
  • Strategic guidelines possible provided by higher level mobility control functions

Advantages

  COMPASS is independent from the means of communication and can manage Signals of any kind: text, ideograms, special messages and combinational forms.

COMPASS is fully connected to the UTOPIA system, with that shares the road network representation and the traffic data’s format. It can also be connected to other (non proprietary) systems.

   The architecture (open and scalable) of COMPASS system can support flexible applications for each test region.

   COMPASS can connect together other systems (ex. Urban Traffic Control, Supervisor of Region Circulation, Informative Systems, Park guidance) in order to distribute control and information strategies as such to exchange traffic data and forecasts.
